Wild Planet

What Happened to Wild Planet on Alexa?

Wild Planet began as a tiny idea back in 2018: a fun little voice app where kids could say the name of an animal and hear its sound. It grew into something none of us expected.

Over the years, Wild Planet became one of India's most-loved experiences. In a lot of households, Alexa was just a Wild Planet Device!

  • 400,000+ families using it every month
  • Tens of Millions of plays every month
  • 45,000+ reviews, loved by toddlers, kids, parents... even pets
  • And yes, the viral news story of a 6-year-old scaring away monkeys using Wild Planet (covered by CNN, NDTV and others)

This wasn't just an "Alexa skill." It became a tiny part of family life in India.

Why Wild Planet had to leave Alexa

By August 2024, it was no longer sustainable (At its peak, Wild Planet cost ₹1 lakh+ per month in infra.) And Alexa India's inability to sustain ecosystem partners meant that the responsible thing was to sunset Wild Planet on Alexa rather than carry false hope.

Wild Planet is back alive, but just not on Alexa

Wild Planet is still voice-first, more independent, and completely free!

You can use it right now, on any Android (+ Chrome browser).

So... What's Next?

After delisting, I've gotten a good number of messages from parents that and it hit hard:

  • "My kid won't eat without Wild Planet."
  • "She's crying during dinner because her mealtime fun is gone."
  • "We feel gutted; Wild Planet was part of our day."

I felt that.

And somewhere deep down, I was also building this for my own little daughter, who is about to turn 12 months old and is beginning to form her first tiny words.

So I did the only thing that felt right:

I rebuilt Wild Planet in 48 hours.

...for the kids who used it, and for the parents who reached out.

And maybe a little bit for my daughter too, so she gets her turn to play with Wild Planet the way so many kids did.
